Now, as I was reading this book, I am taking a course on Cobbley and Language Development for a Post-Bac and a lot of the content for that course tied I love these little graphic Introducing books, and when I saw they had one on Semiotics I just had to have it. Dialogue Tips on technique 5: An excellent intro to semiotic theory.

However, I realized that semiotics intersects an I read this book over the course of a weekend. Specifically, I would have liked to have seen a timeline to keep track of the historical development, maybe a map to show where different academics were based, a glossary for the jargon, maybe even a table that related the different theorists to each other.

Worse still, as the scope of semiotics and signs was seen to extend into more and more introduicng of intellectual study more and more specific fields are explored via semiotics — and each of these also has a barrier to lay understanding, because of yet more jargon for each extra field mentioned.

Now, as I was reading this book, I am taking a course on Reading and Language Development for a Post-Bac and a lot of the content for that course tied into the concepts covered in this book. In addition, this book is about 20 years old at this point – although that certainly isn’t its fault, I don’t know how well it has aged. I appreciated the use of graphics and illustrations to support the text – it especially helped because the topics themselves seem very abstract.
