My only reason for not rating the book more highly is that, although Rookmaaker’s insights are keen, I find his style a bit exacting, and the increasingly depressing nature of the material begins to weigh down on you after a while. This little text, written before Rookmaaker’s unfortunate for us early passing, is one I wish I could have found and read in the late s. His book should serve as an inspiration to future authors who will give us a nuanced and holistic perspective on how different styles of music reflect true and false philosophies.
